How Does EDI work

Good morning I need alittle help here if possible. Can someone explain the process of how EDI(Electronic Data Interchange) works? Reason for the question is that I am involved in a new implementation and in the past I had two co-workers who handle this piece I just provided them with all the information that we were looking for and they completed the process. Any help would be appreciated..

sc00byThis is a relatively complex question to answer in a short space. In addition, much depends on what you plan to do and why you are proposing to use EDI to do this. From your question I'm not sure whether you are seeing help to implement EDI or whether you are you interested in the mechanics of how EDI works. EDI has been around for a long time and there would be a number of organisations that could assist you to implement it. I wrote a brief description of what EDI is in layman's language for the IT Dictionary. However, if you want to know more of the mechanics of how it works Wikopedia has a good write up.
